About the Film

Bringing Assad to Justice is the remarkable story of efforts against the odds to make one of the worst regimes of our time accountable for heinous crimes without parallel since the Nazis.

Never in history has more evidence, and at great risk, been gathered against any regime for war crimes and crimes against humanity than that of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Almost like a thriller, equally unprecedented efforts have been made to stop any attempt to secure justice and accountability while Syrians, many of whom themselves have been tortured and imprisoned by the regime like human rights lawyers have sought to overcome the impossible and are making history in their bid to ensure that Assad himself and all of those responsible for these crimes will be brought to justice.

This is the story of the closing of the doors of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to the victims of the most egregious crimes in our time when Russia with China vetoed the referral of Syria to the ICC and how Syrians have responded with both courage and history-making creativity.

The documentary also looks at the battle of the narratives over Syria and the efforts by the Assad regime and Russia in particular to paint the peaceful protests and millions who supported the 2011 uprising as terrorists or supporters of terrorists.

Finally the documentary offers a fascinating insight into the role of art by Syrians in the area of justice and accountability.

This mammoth review of an extraordinary, innovative and indeed inspiring movement - although its participants do not see themselves as part of a movement - is not only keeping justice on the agenda in any consideration of a resolution in Syria; it may also yet make history.
